FAQ

Why have you changed the name from BAYTRON to CLEVIOS?
From 8th April, 2008, our conductive polymer BAYTRON will only be available under the name CLEVIOS.
This is a change of name only, as the manufacturing process, product quality, service, technical experts and commercial contacts remain completely the same. We have changed the name because of the separation of our company from the Bayer group. All patent rights to BAYTRON products are with H.C. Starck, while Bayer AG has retained the naming rights for BAYTRON – thus, making this name change necessary.

What is CLEVIOS?

What is EDT/EDOT?

EDT or EDOT stand for 3,4 Ethylenedioxythiophene, sold under the trade name CLEVIOS M

What is PEDT or PEDOT?

PEDT or PEDOT stand for Poly(3,4-ethylendioxythiophene) sold under the trade name CLEVIOS P.

What are the specific properties of CLEVIOS P?
  • Conductive Polymer
  • Transparent
  • Safe handling
  • Chemically stable
  • Easy to use polymer dispersion in water or  in-situ polymerisation
  • Tailored product range for specific applications
  • Sales Product manufactured in large scale

Is CLEVIOS P available as a powder?

No, CLEVIOS P is always water based.

Is it possible to use CLEVIOS in a Masterbatch?

No, as it is a water based product you cannot use it in a Masterbatch.

What is the maximum Conductivity?
Maximum Conductivity depends from the formulation. With 5% DMSO
you can get approx. 1000 S/cm or 100 Ohm at 100nm film thickness.

Are higher solid contents available?

Yes, on request.

What is the drying temperature?

The typical drying temperature is > 80°C.

How do I contact
H.C. Starck?
The best way is to e-mail your enquiry to us indicating your application field, and what properties are important for you – the material, the product purity required, key levels of element impurities and the particle size.

What is an Ohm/square?
Ohms/square is a term that is widely used to describe the Surface Resistivity (r ) of a material.  The electrostatic discharge (ESD) association describes the characteristic as follows:  "For an electric current flowing across a surface, the ratio of DC voltage drop per unit length to the surface current per width. In effect, the surface resistivity is the resistance between two opposite sides of a square and is independent of the size of the square or its dimensional units. Surface resistivity is expressed in Ohms/square." [From: The ESD Association Glossary, ESD-ADV 1.0-1994 (1)]

How do I find product information?
You can take the information from this web site. For a formal specification, please email us or submit the online inquiry form.

How can I get a sample?
Order through our local sales office or e-mail us. The product range is broad so correct product selection is critical.

Do you have free samples?
H.C. Starck does not generally provide free samples of any of the CLEVIOS products, but you can order small quantities. Also, some of the CLEVIOS products are available in research quantities from Sigma-Aldrich.

Who can I contact for technical assistance or information on CLEVIOS ?

We have technicians in Europe, North America and Asia. Please e-mail us and we will forward the information to our regional specialists.

Whom do I contact for a price?

E –mail with your request. Included product volume and over what time period the material is required for.
Is H.C.Starck ISO-9001 certified ?

Yes.  A copy of our certificate is available on request .
Is CLEVIOS available in solvents other than water?
Unfortunately we have no water-free solvent systems available for the CLEVIOS P products.  The CLEVIOS P material is a polymer composite/complex of PEDOT (a hole-doped electrically conductive polythiophene) and PSSA ( a high molecular weight polystyrenesulfonic acid)

What is the work function of PEDOT?
The work-function determines the energy necessary to remove an electron from the sample-surface and can therefore be seen as the energy of the HOMO.  Several groups, ie. the Cambridge University. have made work function measurements and determined the energy (for CLEVIOS P VP AI 4083) to be 4.8-5.2 eV (e.g. T. M. Brown et al.,  Appl. Phys. Lett. 75 (1999) 1679).

What is the difference between the grades of CLEVIOS P?

What can one use to improve the wetting of CLEVIOS P coating applications?
CLEVIOS P is just PEDOT/PSS and water, and so it behaves like water in coating operations.  For this reason, it is often necessary to add wetting agents, surfactants and/or solvents to the coating mixture to improve quality of the coated films. Many additives work, but here is a list of some usual ones.
